Hair Graft Calculator FAQ
You select the zones where you are losing hair on the 3D head and rate the density of your donor area, the hair at the back of your head. Each zone has a set graft range, and your donor rating adjusts those ranges. The calculator adds up the zones you picked and shows an approximate graft count, a low-to-high range and roughly how many hairs those grafts carry.
There are six: temples, front sides, hairline and front, mid-scalp, top of the head and crown. Turn the head, or use the Front and Top views, and select every zone where the hair is thin or gone. If you know your stage on the Norwood scale, early stages usually affect the temples and hairline, and later stages add the mid-scalp, the top of the head and the crown.
The donor area is the band of hair at the back and sides of your head. This hair resists pattern hair loss, which is why grafts are taken from there. Check it in a mirror or ask someone to take a photo, then choose Thin, Average or Thick. If you cannot tell, choose Not sure and send us a photo on WhatsApp for a free donor check.
A denser donor area can support a fuller plan, so the zone ranges go up for a thick donor area and down for a thin one. Your rating also sets the donor supply that your result is compared with. These figures are a lifetime supply, not what can be taken in one session.
The calculator compares the grafts you need with the lower end of your donor supply.
- Donor fits: you need up to 60% of it, so your donor area should cover the plan.
- Near limit: you need 60% to 90% of it. The plan is possible, but the front may come first.
- Prioritise: you need more than 90% of it. The most visible areas are usually restored first, or the plan is split into two sessions.
A graft is a small group of one to four hairs that grow together, also called a follicular unit. The calculator works with about 2.25 hairs per graft for an average donor area, 2 for a thin one and 2.5 for a thick one. That is why it shows grafts and hairs separately.
With an average donor area:
- Hairline and front plus mid-scalp: about 1,800 grafts (1,600–2,000), around 4,000 hairs.
- Mid-scalp, top of the head and crown: about 3,100 grafts (2,900–3,300), around 7,250 hairs.
- All six zones: about 6,800 grafts (6,300–7,300). At this size the plan usually focuses first on the areas that frame the face.
It gives a realistic planning range, but a doctor's count can be higher or lower. The calculator cannot measure the size of your scalp, see how much hair is still growing in thinning areas, judge how thick or curly your hair is, or check your donor density under magnification. Younger patients, or anyone whose hair loss is still active, may also need grafts kept in reserve. Our guide on how many hair grafts you need explains how doctors calculate the final number.
Yes, but the zones follow the way male pattern hair loss usually progresses. Hair loss in women is more often diffuse thinning along the parting, so a doctor's review of photos gives a more reliable number. See our page on hair transplant for women.
Not at Hermest. Our packages are a flat, all-inclusive price that covers as many grafts as your donor area safely allows, with no per-graft fee. See what each package includes on our hair transplant cost in Turkey page.
